Second round of presidential elections in Iran

The second round of presidential elections is taking place in Iran today. The results will determine the foreign policy course that the Islamic Republic will choose, including in the matter of building relations with Russia. In the first round, reformist Masoud Pezeshkian emerged as the leader. He calls for a return to dialogue and improved relations with the West. The second candidate, Said Jalili, proposes continuing the conservative and confrontational course towards the West. Which path Iran will choose is in the NEWS.ru article.

How Iranians Failed to Elect a President on the First Try

The Islamic Republic’s second-in-command position, with the country’s spiritual leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei the first, has been vacant since the tragic death of President Ibrahim Raisi in a plane crash in May. By law, Iranian citizens must elect a new president through a popular vote.

Iranians failed to name the new president the first time around. According to the results of the vote that took place on June 28, none of the participants in the presidential race were able to gain an absolute majority to recognize the elections as valid. The leader then was the former Minister of Health, reformer Masoud Pezeshkian, who secured the support of 42.5% of voters (973 thousand votes). His rival, the representative of the Supreme Leader of Iran in the Supreme National Security Council, conservative Saeed Jalili, received 38.6% of citizens’ votes (963 thousand voters). The turnout in the elections was 40%, which was an anti-record for the 45 years of the Islamic Republic’s existence.
