The House of the Omarov “Terrorist Family”: How the Sergokalinsky District of Dagestan Lives

In Dagestan, a court arrested the former head of the Sergokalinsky district, Magomed Omarov, for an administrative offence, and his six sons for petty hooliganism. Earlier, it became known that the official’s relatives killed by security forces were involved in the terrorist attacks on June 23 in Derbent and Makhachkala.

Omarov was expelled from the United Russia party for “discrediting actions.” Now his relatives are called “a family of terrorists.”

The former head of the district said during interrogation that some of his sons were Wahhabis. But most family members did not maintain contact with them. The official assured investigators that he did not consider himself a member of a radical religious movement. Relatives of the alleged terrorists who committed the attacks recorded a video in which they asked for forgiveness from the victims’ families.

Since 2007, Omarov has been a deputy of the People’s Assembly of the Republic of Dagestan, and in 2008 he became deputy chairman of the parliamentary committee on economic policy. He headed the Sergokalinsky district since October 2010.

On June 23, terrorists attacked Orthodox churches, synagogues and a traffic police post in Derbent and Makhachkala. The attack killed 21 people and injured 46 others. Three days of mourning were declared in Dagestan. The Russian Investigative Committee opened a criminal case on three counts of terrorist act, illegal possession and theft of firearms.
