Tazy-2024: How the traditional festivities of MSTU graduates went

“Riding on basins” in Moscow

Every year, students of Bauman Moscow State Technical University organize “skating on basins” in Moscow on the last Friday of June. This is how they celebrate receiving their diploma.

Usually, the graduates’ fun comes down to pouring beer and riding on basins – new specialists ride down the dormitory stairs in basins, and often tie them to cars and ride around the student campus near Izmailovsky Park. One of the attributes of the celebration is a helmet and clothes with the print “I am an engineer”.

This tradition has existed for many years. Sometimes the wild fun was perceived as a street protest. As publicist and former leader of the Student Defense trade union Dmitry Kostenko told NEWS.ru, in 2015 the celebrations resembled barricades to which riot police were deployed.

“In 2015, the celebration grew into a real student revolution. Then, the riot police called by residents of neighboring houses were forced to retreat in the face of superior student forces. The police special forces were driven back into three minibuses with stones and sticks, and 6th Parkovaya [Street] was blocked by a barricade of burning garbage cans. The law enforcement officers did not dare to return with reinforcements and allowed the students to roam around until the morning,” he said.

But in 2016, Bauman students were banned from organizing “vehicle races”, although the tradition  was tacitly observed . And in 2022, according to Dmitry Kostenko, paddy wagons were brought to the campus, and patrols were posted at the entrances to Izmailovsky Park, who allegedly did not allow people in helmets inside.

This year, the event organizers reported that “skating in our traditional form will be possible
