“Meanly, from around the corner”: why there are so many victims of terrorist attacks in Dagestan, an explanation

Counter-terrorist operation in Dagestan

The head of Dagestan explained the large losses of security forces during the terrorist attacks in Makhachkala and Derbent on June 23 by the “meanness” of terrorists. How many were killed, how does Sergei Melikov explain this?

How many people died in the terrorist attacks in Makhachkala and Derbent on June 23

On July 1, it became known that the number of people killed after the terrorist attacks in Makhachkala and Derbent on June 23 had reached 22. The head of Dagestan announced this at a meeting with representatives of public institutions in Makhachkala.

According to Melikov, 21 people died on the day of the terrorist attacks, and another police officer died in hospital from serious injuries the next day. On June 25, the Dagestan Ministry of Health reported only 21 deaths and did not provide any further information.

The media cited different figures: on June 25, a source told the Telegram channel “112” that the death toll had reached 25 people , with another 51 people injured. Among the dead were 15 security forces, 5 civilians, and 5 people whose identities were not established.

It is known that among the dead was the head of the police department of the village of Dagestanskie Ogni Mavludin Khidirnabiyev, as well as Lieutenant Vitaly Mezentsev, who was sent to the republic from Tyumen . Five militants were eliminated during the clashes.

What happened, why are there such losses among the security forces?

At a press conference on July 5, the head of Dagestan, Sergei Melikov , criticized “pseudo-experts” who do not understand the reasons for the large losses among security forces.

“Now pseudo-experts who have never held a machine gun in their hands are saying: why such a loss ratio? Why were five eliminated bandits able to kill almost 20 law enforcement officers? Firstly, because this attack was vile, from around the corner, covert, on a peaceful day, and, strictly speaking, unexpected, because it is, in essence, barbaric,” Melikov said in Makhachkala.

According to the head of Dagestan, the police, “figuratively speaking, stood in a row” to protect civilians. Most of the dead were traffic police and patrol police officers, he said.

“They were the first to be in the way of armed trained bandits, who, I am more than sure, had studied the places, the order, the nature of the service in advance. One squad was practically shot at the time when they were inspecting transport. And with his chest or his back, it doesn’t matter, this officer covered the person whose car he was inspecting,” Melikov said.
