Russians are now actively booking train and plane tickets, as well as entire vacation packages for the rest of the summer. Doing this at the last minute is expensive, but even in such a case NEWS.ru has advice on how to save on a trip around the country and abroad.

How to Save on Train Tickets: General Tips

  • Buy tickets at least 35-37 days before departure. Buying tickets in advance, during high season or for popular destinations can save up to 40% on the cost;
  • travel at “inconvenient” times. For example, a ticket for a train that leaves at lunchtime is sometimes cheaper than an evening one;
  • Travel in the off-season: this refers to the periods between holidays and school holidays. Low-priced tickets may also appear close to the departure date;
  • sometimes additional carriages are allocated, boarding on which is much cheaper before departure;
  • choose a ticket with a non-refundable fare. Tickets that cannot be returned (non-refundable) are usually cheaper than regular tickets – the discount on them can reach 10-20%;
  • When traveling with a child, it is often more profitable to buy an upper berth at the adult rate and a lower berth at the child rate.

How to take into account coefficients before buying train tickets

First, it is worth familiarizing yourself with the seasonal coefficients of Russian Railways. The fact is that tickets cost differently on different dates. Often this depends on the popularity of certain destinations in certain months.
