On July 4, parliamentary elections were held in Great Britain. The opposition Labour Party is in the lead by a wide margin, holding the majority of seats in the lower house of parliament. Sir Keir Starmer, the leader of the Labour Party, has already been appointed Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. NEWS.ru looked into his attitude towards Russia and what will happen to London’s foreign policy after the change of government.

What are the results of the UK parliamentary elections?

On Thursday, July 4, elections to the lower house of parliament, the House of Commons, were held in Great Britain. To obtain a majority, parties needed to gain 326 seats out of 650. According to preliminary data, the opposition Labour Party won the elections. It received 412 seats, while the Conservatives received only 121. For the Conservative Party, this could be the worst result in the last 200 years.

This result contrasts with the results of the 2019 general election. Then, the Conservatives won a majority of 365 seats. But the 203 mandates that the Labour Party won then are much more than the Conservatives now get.

The Liberal Democrats also significantly strengthened their position in this election, winning 71 seats. In the previous convocation, they had only 8 mandates. Support for the Scottish National Party, on the contrary, has noticeably dropped: the number of its mandates has decreased from 46 to 9. The Sinn Fein party, which nominates candidates in Northern Ireland, retained its 7 seats. There are also more independent MPs in the House of Commons — 28 against 17 in 2019.

Now former British Prime Minister and Conservative leader Rishi Sunak confirmed overnight that the Labour Party had won the country’s parliamentary elections. He said he would step down as head of government and took responsibility for his party’s defeat. On the afternoon of July 5, he left his residence at 10 Downing Street, and  Labour leader Keir Starmer took office as Prime Minister.

Who is Keir Starmer

Before entering politics, Labour Party leader Keir Starmer was a successful lawyer. In particular, he became famous for defending activists David Morris and Helen Steel in the libel case against them by the global fast food chain McDonald’s (the McLibel case). Thanks to his successes, he became the prototype for the “dashing lawyer” Mark Darcy in the book and film “Bridget Jones’s Diary”.

After entering politics, Starmer served as a human rights adviser in Northern Ireland and as the chief public prosecutor in the Crown Prosecution Service. In 2016, after being elected to the House of Commons, he was appointed shadow minister for EU exit (a post he would have held had Labour had a parliamentary majority) by then-party leader Jeremy Corbyn. In 2020, Starmer defeated Corbyn in an internal party election and expelled him from the party.

How Starmer views Russia

Keir Starmer is knighted as “Sir” and received the title for his human rights work, including taking anti-Russian positions. In 2007, he represented Marina Carter, the widow of former FSB officer Alexander Litvinenko, in court.

In 2018, Starmer, following then Prime Minister Theresa May, accused Russia of poisoning Sergei and Yulia Skripal with Novichok.

“I stood up and condemned what happened in Salisbury and I formally supported the then prime minister,” he said at the t

After the start of the special operation, the head of the Labour Party took a tough stance against Russia. In February 2023, he met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv. Then he assured the Ukrainian leader that the Labour Party supported Ukraine in matters of defense, training of Ukrainian Armed Forces units in the UK and access to military technology.

Starmer, even if he took a different position on Russia, would in any case be guided by the political atmosphere and political consensus that has developed in Great Britain, political scientist Andrei Kulikov told NEWS.ru.

“His personal views will be secondary in terms of decision-making. If he actively begins to express his views that contradict the positions of the establishment, there is a risk that a split will occur in the party,” he explained.
