Viktor Orban and Vladimir Putin

Russian President Vladimir Putin held a meeting with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who recently visited Kyiv. The main topic of the dialogue was the settlement of the conflict in Ukraine. In Russia, the Hungarian politician’s tour was called “shuttle diplomacy.” At the same time, experts interviewed by NEWS.ru do not rule out that Orban could have brought real developments on resolving the crisis. What did he offer Putin and will this bring the negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv closer – in the NEWS.ru article.

What Putin and Orban discussed

Orban arrived in Moscow on July 5. He called his trip a continuation of the “peace mission” that began with his visit to Kiev. “The number of countries that can talk to both sides of the conflict is rapidly decreasing. Soon Hungary will probably be the only country in Europe that can talk to everyone,” he added.

The talks were held behind closed doors. Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov said the leaders had a frank conversation on all issues related to the Ukrainian crisis. At the same time, Orban did not convey any messages  from Kiev to the Russian leader, he added.

Putin later called the meeting timely and useful. He said that Moscow is in favor of a complete and final end to the Ukrainian conflict . However, the Russian Federation does not see Kiev’s readiness to abandon military action, the president emphasized.

Orban noted that he had received answers from Putin to his questions – what the head of the Russian Federation thinks about negotiations with Ukraine, how they can be conducted and what kind of Europe he sees after the end of the conflict. The politician expressed the opinion that the positions of Moscow and Kiev on key issues are very far apart.

Orban’s visit showed that the Hungarian prime minister could become a new reliable supporter of Russia in the West, State Duma deputy Alexander Tolmachev expressed his opinion in an interview with NEWS.ru. “Hungary consistently defends its position in international politics, being the only truly independent country in Europe. Orban is focused on dialogue with Putin. He confidently and clearly pursues his line, defending the interests of his country, and not someone overseas. And if it is true that Hungary is the last sovereign state in the eurozone, then Orban is perhaps its last adequate top politician,” the parliamentarian said.

What the West and Ukraine said about Orban’s visit

Since July 1, Hungary has been presiding over the EU. However, Orban has stated that he is not negotiating with Russia on behalf of the union, but on behalf of his country. “I do not need to receive a mandate for negotiations, since I do not represent anyone,” he stressed.

European Commission spokesman Eric Mamer confirmed that the prime minister had not coordinated his trip to Moscow with the EU. According to the European official, Orban’s decision “undermines the unity” of the union.

At the same time, the Hungarian politician informed NATO about his visit. The head of the North Atlantic Alliance, Jens Stoltenberg, admitted that the results of the negotiations between Orban and Putin will be discussed at the organization’s summit in Washington next week.

Ukraine expressed indignation at the contacts between Moscow and Budapest. The press service of the country’s Foreign Ministry drew attention to the fact that Orban did not coordinate the trip with Kiev. “We remind you that for our state the principle of “no agreements on Ukraine without Ukraine” remains unshakable, and we call on all states to strictly adhere to it,” the department emphasized.
